Look beyond numbers to achieve challenging goals

Image
Everybody loves to achieve challenging goals, right? I love it! Gives me a kick. I have been evolving on how I approach my goals. Back in my school, I was more of a doer (without much planning); in my college, I learned how to set goals and solve problems by breaking it into smaller steps. During my corporate stint, I learned number driven problem solving where each part of the solution has its own objective metrics and targets. Being number driven not only helped me in removing my bias in creating a better solution, but it also helped me in aligning my peers and team members to my solution. I do enjoy having these tools in my arsenal to solve problems better and achieve challenging goals. But what’s next? What's next to achieve challenging goals? As I interact with many fellow entrepreneurs, I have seen them vent their frustrations with the unexpected negative consequence of relying on numbers to solve problems. I have seen two major issues - Limited numbers ...

Kill negative emotions

After wondering on how large is our life goal  and on  how large is human race making , I haven't gone anywhere :) So till I figure out the answers of life goal, I have started working on how to lead a blissful life. This ensures I enjoy my pursuit of figuring out a genuine life goal. To get you started as well, let me ask if you relate with any of the following - I am passionate to make it large, but I am stressed currently with my work I did something wrong last week and since then it has been bothering me endlessly My neighbor got a bigger car, damn it! I just can't quit drinking even though I want to ... and so on These are all negative emotions that happen throughout the day and makes one feel miserable. Lot of these negative emotions would happen at the subtle level and one might not even notice them. Negative emotions such as jealousy, guilt, anger, stress are part of everybody's life and only take one away from a blissful life. What if they go away! ...

How large is human race making?

In my previous blog, I scribbled on how large is your large . There I concluded that our canvas is just too big and we need to think hard about how can we do something meaningful. While I ponder on what this meaningful could be, I would like to share my thoughts on what we consider meaningful things in this world as it stands today, with the following questions - What are by and large the achievements of human race in the last 1-2 centuries? Are these achievements really "achievements" in our big canvas (time x distance x yet_unknown_dimensions ).  Does human race have a direction and all efforts aligned towards that direction? Who are the people responsible for these achievements? What are rest of the folks doing? I read various articles on Google on achievements human race has accomplished and these articles mostly talked about achievements in astrophysics (e.g. Mars mission), physics (e.g. quantum physics), medical science, architectural marvels, musical w...

Make it large! How large is your large?

We are passionate people. Oh yeah! We are driven by passion to achieve something and give purpose to our life. We want to make our life large. This blog should give you a perspective no how large is your large. Even better it can inspire you to choose a larger life goal for yourself. Once you are clear what you want to achieve, all that remains is to figure out how to achieve that :) Before we start, think about what is your life goal - something that you feel will give purpose to your life. Take a minute here.... .. Now that you know, ask a question 'so what'. For e.g. if your life goal is to become a billionaire, do ask "After I become a millionaire, so what?". This will prepare you for the remaining blog. Please do not start with "this is what I can do best, so I will do this", as this will give you a biased life goal. Instead first see where you want to reach and then will figure out how best can you do it. To get a perspective on how large is you...

Will I make it large?

Image
A few days back I was sharing a ride with CEO / founder of a well reputed firm and once the atmosphere was informal I asked him 'How does it feel to be at your position - well up in the ladder?' I wasn't asking out of the blue, very precisely I wanted to know - How would I feel when I will reach there - contempt, even more hunger for success, proud, stressed out, rewarded, nothing unusual, etc. What are the unknowns - anything unexpected that I can not visualize at my current state What will be my "Have I made it large" moment, it at all there would be any He is one of the smartest guy I have ever known and I was expecting to get my answers. He told that he wonders if has made it large already? There are companies that grew faster than his while his company grew faster than most of the other companies. He answered my question with the carrot and stick approach . He explained how does the carrot keeps getting bigger as one grows. He wouldn't be satisf...

Empathy for animals

Image
I was watching Delhi Safari  - an animated Indian movie that describes how humans are destroying animals' habitat. I  would applaud the movie crew for the complete movie and I  liked the message this movie delivers. A clip from the movie 'Delhi Safari' - The  Mahabharata , one of the epics of Hinduism has multiple mentions of the phrase  Ahimsa Paramo Dharma  (अहिंसा परमॊ धर्मः), which literally means: non-violence is the highest moral virtue. I believe non-violence derives from empathy towards others and it should be extended to not only fellow humans but also to animals. I understand the pyramid of food chain concept but there is more than food chain by which we harm animals. My idea of this blog is to share few lifestyle changes that we can adopt and show empathy for animals. Larve steamed alive for silk Clothing - There are so many categories of clothes that come from brutally harming animals. Clothing industry creates them...

Yoga Nidra - First experience

Image
This summer, I came to India again for 3 months and of the most random things, I joined Yoga classes held at Chilla Sports Complex, New Delhi. My motivation to join was to know Yoga and also to exercise in the morning. In some sense Yoga appealed to me as a daily stress buster as well. Gyming, swimming, etc definitely exert stress and I wanted to try something different. I go in the morning 7-8am where our amazing Yoga instructor, Shailendra ji, mentor us as we twist and turn our body :) Our schedule mostly starts with Pranayam (breathing, meditation focused) and progresses to heavy exercises ( Chakrasana , Parvatasana, etc.). In the end is my favorite one - YogaNidra  - a systematic meditation that meets physical, neurological and subconscious needs which relaxes the body immensely. YogaNidra Posture In YogaNindra, Shailendra ji, tells us to lie down in Shavasana and then he recites a script which mainly focuses on various body parts for 10 minutes. Here is the essence:...

Cowboys! for a day I have always been fascinated by different lifestyles that people have. Till recently, I have not seen a lot of lifestyles. Sure people have different jobs and different routine life, but it starts and ends with going to office, coming back and spending time with family. I am not talking about a student or a college hostel life, because in the end they also thrive to follow the same routine. People do have variations in job, but almost all of them have similar lifestyle and same complaints - long working hours, no passion for work, insufficient salaries, etc. I feel people are mostly lost in their routine life and forget their passion and their individuality in the process. Farm House in a forest I met Jess and Lita in Charlottesville - they are an amazing pair. They are both very affectionate and have seen a few more years than us. Lita mentioned she has a horse and since then I was very excited to try my hands on horse riding - and pose like a cow...
