Introduction of Lokpall Bill - Power of Public

Late night, 11.40 pm we were waiting for our metro at Connaught Place, New Delhi. Wondering about all that happened during past few hours that gave me a glimpse of the unity and strong voice of public of India. This time it wasn't for a world cup win, but for a more meaningful cause: "Introduction of Lokpal Bill in India". We walked down from Jantar Mantar to CP Metro station and in the way caught so many young and old folks, all carrying a smile on their faces.

Two hours ago, we heard an announcement that Indian Govt. has agreed to all the demands and is ready to pass Lokpal Bill (News). News came with a sudden celebration and we could see activists shouting slogans, dancing on dhol beats (you always have a Punjabi dhol ready in Delhi, if you anticipate a glory moment) and waving the national flag. It seemed that they rightly deserved the celebration for they pushed the cause against corruption and supported their leader Anna Hazare. It was great to see that citizens here are not just fans of cricket, but they are equally passionate about their county.

But this celebration came with efforts. For 4 day Anna Hazare was on fast and with him many other followed the custom. We could see people fainting due to fatigue and weakness, and been carried away by volunteers for medical aid. There efforts were well supported by 1000s of others who were rallying, shouting slogans and waving banners in not only Delhi but also in other major cities of India. Online communication has become so strong that twitter and facebook were taken by this wave (News). I could only expect that during next such movement, number of activists rises to millions instead of just 1000s. Also this time it was more restricted towards the educated group and could not propagate much to small towns, where the vote banks actually lie (News). I believe that we have no right of cribbing or blaming government or system, if we are not ready to rope ourselves to bring in the change.

Following are some of the pictures I managed with my mobile camera to show a glimpse of the activities in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. (click to zoom)
